: Polymers for Energy Storage Applications
Recently, with the advent of the electric vehicle era, research to develop batteries that can travel long distances with fast charging times while ensuring safety has received worldwide attention. Companies like LG Energy Solutions, SK Innovation, and Samsung SDI, along with many other chemical industries, are actively seeking advanced materials for high-performance batteries. Silicon (Si) or silicon oxide (SiOx) anodes are receiving great attention due to their high theoretical capacity that is 3~10 times higher than graphite. However, the commercialization of Si-based anodes requires the development of a new class of binders that can effectively dissipate the stress of Si anodes during charging and discharging. In our lab, we focus on synthesizing high-performance polymer binders through diverse polymerization and crosslinking, aiming to serve as stable binders for Si anodes in the next generation of lithium-ion batteries.
