: Programmable Adaptive Materials based on Liquid Crystal Elastomers Toward 4D Printing
In the area of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution, there is a global emphasis on advancing intelligent materials that can adapt to external environments. Liquid crystals (LCs), renowned for their use in LCDs, are unique due to their anisotropic nature, allowing the alignment of LC molecules in various ways. The distinctive feature allows the reversible change of order parameters through external stimuli such as heat, light, electricity, and chemicals. In our lab, we focus on development of intelligent LC elastomers (LCEs) capable of macroscopic/ microscopic shape and color changes through various alignment techniques including rubbing, photoalignment, and 3D printing. Thanks to the unique combination of LC and rubber-like properties, the LCEs are promising for various applications ranging from artificial muscles (actuators) and soft robotics to 4D printing, flexible electronics, smart surfaces (haptics), sensors, damping and adhesives.
